Texas Americana Rock • Songwriter • Guitar-Slinger
Persistence and Roots
Austin Gilliam has built his career on persistence — a theme that runs through his life and music. From his start as a sideman in Texas’ country scene to fronting his own band, Gilliam has blurred the lines between country and rock, forging his own Americana rock style. In May 2023, after years of pandemic delays, he released his long-awaited album I’m Sorry, I’m Fine, a record aged to perfection and fueled by grit, heart, and big guitars.
Early Influences
Raised in Kingsville, Texas, Gilliam’s musical spark began with his mother’s 12-string acoustic and the electrifying solos of Slash in Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine.” By 15, he nervously debuted with Simon & Garfunkel’s “Mrs. Robinson” at a Corpus Christi café. By 17, he was working the local rock circuit, hauling gear, and learning from seasoned blues players at Dr. Rockits’ bar. Those nights — fused with Brit rock, grunge, metal, and Tom Petty — began shaping his sound.
New Braunfels & Songwriter Awakening
A move to New Braunfels immersed Gilliam in the Americana hub of Gruene Hall and River Road Ice House, where he gravitated toward acoustic storytellers like Ryan Adams, Slaid Cleaves, Jason Isbell, and Chris Knight. His time there broadened his horizons and refined his craft. He became a sought-after guitarist and bassist for Brandon Jenkins, Drew Kennedy, and Matt King, earning respect as a harmony-singing sideman while sharpening his own songwriting voice.
Becoming a Frontman
Standing at 6’5” with a mountain-man beard, burly guitar tone, and edgy baritone, Gilliam finally stepped into the frontman role in 2010. “Screw it, I’ll start my own project,” he recalls. By 2014, his calendar was filled exclusively with his own shows. His 2012 EP Sunshine showcased his blend of pop-rock energy and roots honesty, featuring the local radio favorite “Strawberry Lemonade”, the Brit-rock-inspired “Convenient”, and the heartfelt ballad “Next Stop”.
The New Album: I’m Sorry, I’m Fine
Post-pandemic, Gilliam returned stronger than ever with I’m Sorry, I’m Fine, a bold collection that refuses to fit neatly into one genre. Each track stands alone, but together they create a powerhouse set marked by big guitars, sharp melodies, and emotional honesty.
Highlights
- “A Little Dirt” — a gritty honky-tonker, unapologetic and raw.
- “Runnin’” — pure Americana with a soaring, addictive chorus.
- “Never Gonna Die” — a punch of British rock, followed by a pint in an Irish pub.
- “I’m Sorry” — a pleading anthem of roads that never quite meet.
- “I’m Fine” — a genre-defying orphan that finds its forever home in Gilliam’s collection.
The album is a treasure chest of styles — perfect for listeners who dig deep and never want to surface empty-handed.
The Performer
Gilliam’s commanding stage presence, mix of gutsy guitar work and compassionate storytelling, and a knack for writing hooks that keep audiences dancing and singing make him a standout in the Texas music scene. He is both a product of his roots and a relentless reinvention of them, a fisherman of melody who never comes back empty.
