Aaron Watson
Country’s Ultimate Underdog Troubadour
For over 20 years, Aaron Watson has crisscrossed the land as country’s ultimate underdog troubadour — a fiercely independent artist with the spirit of the American frontier in his veins and a self-made empire to match.
Working without corporate backers, Watson has stormed the Billboard Country Album Top 10 five times — including his triumphant 2015 set The Underdog, which hit #1. Alongside sold-out shows across the nation, he made history at country radio in 2017 with “Outta Style” and “Run Wild Horses.” But despite these milestones, the Texas native continues to fight far above his weight, reminding fans with every note why independence matters.
The Drive Behind Unwanted Man
“It’s not like, ‘Is there any gas left in the tank?’” Watson insists.
“This is just who I am. I still believe I haven’t written my best song yet … I’m just getting started.”
Unwanted Man is Watson’s 18th studio album, and perhaps his most daring yet. Written largely at home during the early pandemic months, produced alongside his drummer Nate Coon, and even shot on his iPhone after a last-minute COVID cancellation, the album is the embodiment of his renegade spirit. A vocal injury delayed its release, but like every obstacle in his career, it only fueled his determination.
Defying the Odds
In 2017, Watson became one of the only independent artists in 50 years to crack country radio’s Top 10 with “Outta Style.” That breakthrough cemented his reputation as a fighter who refuses to back down. From RodeoHouston’s massive stadium stage to dusty honky-tonks on rural highways, his fans have never stopped showing up — and they remain the foundation of his career.
“Because of these fans, I don’t feel like an unwanted man,” Watson explains. “I built my career at the honky tonks … and I’m going to keep pushing forward. That’s what this is all about.”
Inside the Album
- Title Track: “Unwanted Man” — a raw, heartfelt thank-you to the fans who’ve carried him.
- “Cheap Seats” — pledges loyalty to everyday concertgoers over corporate tastemakers.
- “Old Man Said” — tender wisdom passed from father to son.
- “Crash Landing” — a weary traveler looking for a place to rest.
- “Dancing Around the Truth” — new energy in the familiar one-last-time love story.
- “What’s Left of Me” — time and tribulation measured in scars and lessons.
- “Once In a Life” — a sweeping Paul McCartney-inspired closer with strings and grandeur.
- “Heck of a Song” — a working-musician’s anthem promising he’ll never stop.
The Long Road
Seventeen years in, Aaron Watson remains a true outlaw in spirit — not because of rebellion for its own sake, but because of unyielding authenticity. His voice may be raw, his road unconventional, but his vision is clear: freedom over compromise.
“I’m right where I wanna be,” he declares. “No one can put labels on me. This isn’t a sprint. It’s a long-distance race — and there’s room at the table for all of us.”
