Adrian Belew is a guitar guru, sonic pioneer, and boundary-breaking artist. Over the course of his career, he has released 20 critically acclaimed solo albums, fronted King Crimson for three decades, and collaborated with icons like David Bowie, Frank Zappa, Paul Simon, Nine Inch Nails, Talking Heads, and Tom Tom Club.
Known for his inventive guitar tones, playful time signatures, and technical wizardry, Belew has continually reinvented how music is created and consumed — even extending his creativity into apps like FLUX:FX and FLUX by belew, where the music is “never the same twice.”
Career Timeline
- 1970: Discovered by Frank Zappa while playing Nashville’s Fanny’s club; soon joins Zappa’s band.
- 1979: Tours with Talking Heads after meeting them while on tour with Bowie; plays on Remain in Light.
- 1980: Meets Robert Fripp on his first Talking Heads tour — is invited to join the soon-to-be-reformed King Crimson.
- 1981: Officially joins King Crimson; co-writes and records with Tom Tom Club, including their smash hit “Genius of Love.”
- 1982: Releases debut solo album Lone Rhino, featuring Big Electric Cat.
- 1983: Releases Twang Bar King, earning his now-famous nickname.
- 1986: Releases Desire Caught by the Tail; tours with his band The Bears.
- 1989: Releases Mr. Music Head on Atlantic Records, hosts PostModern MTV for a week.
- 1990: Tours as musical director and band leader for David Bowie.
- 1992: Releases Inner Revolution; receives a shout-out on The Simpsons.
- 1995: King Crimson returns with Vrooom and Thrak; plays Dinosaur on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
- 1996–2000: Prolific period — solo albums like Op Zop Too Wah and Belewprints; appears with Nine Inch Nails on The Fragile; continues touring with King Crimson.
- 2001: Receives Cincinnati Entertainment Award Lifetime Achievement Award (presented by Peter Frampton).
