Al Jardine of the Beach Boys (trio)

Alan “Al” Jardine — guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, and one of the founding members of The Beach Boys — has spent more than six decades shaping the soundtrack of the California coast. Born in Lima, Ohio in 1942 and raised in Hawthorne, California, Al met Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson, Mike Love, and David Marks, and together they created the rock ’n’ roll voice of the West Coast, filling the airwaves with songs of surfing, hot rods, and California girls.
Al’s musicianship is as versatile as it is iconic: he played rhythm guitar (and bass on early recordings) and delivered the unforgettable lead vocal on the No. 1 smash “Help Me Rhonda.” His songwriting contributions appeared on classic albums like Holland, Carl and the Passions – So Tough, Surf’s Up, and Sunflower. For decades, Al toured relentlessly with The Beach Boys until Carl Wilson’s passing in 1998.
As a solo artist, Al has continued to make waves. His debut Live in Las Vegas (2001) featured his sons Matt and Adam Jardine along with Carnie and Wendy Wilson of Wilson Phillips. In 2010, he released A Postcard From California, featuring friends and legends like Neil Young, Stephen Stills, David Crosby, Steve Miller, Glen Campbell, America, Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Alec Baldwin, and his fellow Beach Boys. The record combined fresh takes on classics with environmentally-themed originals. In recognition of his extraordinary career, Al received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award as a member of The Beach Boys.
In 2012, Al reunited with Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, and David Marks for the album That’s Why God Made the Radio and the 50th Anniversary Beach Boys Tour. From 2016–2018, he toured globally with Brian Wilson to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Pet Sounds, bringing to life masterpieces like “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “God Only Knows,” and “Sloop John B” — the latter introduced to the group by Al himself.
As a solo performer, Al has earned rave reviews for his “Postcard From California” tour, a heartfelt blend of hits, rarities, and behind-the-scenes stories told with his son Matt. His acclaimed solo album returned in 2018 on limited-edition vinyl (selling out instantly) and later received worldwide re-release through Universal Music in 2022. In 2019, Al was inducted into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame, honoring his early ties to New York.
Now in the 2020s, Al continues to tour both with Brian Wilson and with his own Endless Summer Band. In 2025, he announced the reassembly of Brian Wilson’s band as The Pet Sounds Band, spotlighting mid-to-late ’70s Beach Boys albums such as 15 Big Ones, The Beach Boys Love You, and M.I.U. Album. Al also unveiled a brand-new EP, Islands In The Sun, featuring four fresh tracks — including the title song, described by Al as the follow-up to “Kokomo”, and “My Plane Leaves Tomorrow (Au Revoir)” with guest vocals by Neil Young and trumpet by Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Surf’s up! Al Jardine remains a living link to rock history and an artist who continues to create, inspire, and bring audiences to their feet.
