Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder

Ricky Skaggs has lived a life steeped in music. By age 21, he was already considered a “recognized master” of bluegrass, and over the decades he has become one of the most influential figures in American roots and country music. With a career that spans more than 60 years, Skaggs has seamlessly moved between bluegrass, country, and gospel while staying true to his roots.
Born in Cordell, Kentucky, Ricky first picked up the mandolin at age five and quickly earned the attention of legends like Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs. In the 1970s, he toured with Ralph Stanley and later joined Emmylou Harris’ Hot Band before breaking out as a solo artist. By the 1980s, Skaggs topped the country charts with 12 #1 hits, became the youngest member of the Grand Ole Opry at the time, and helped spearhead the neo-traditionalist movement in country music. Renowned guitarist Chet Atkins even credited him with “single-handedly saving country music.”
Skaggs’ accomplishments are staggering: 15 Grammy Awards, 8 CMA Awards, induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Bluegrass Hall of Fame, the Musicians Hall of Fame, and the prestigious National Medal of Arts. With his band Kentucky Thunder—widely regarded as one of the finest ensembles in bluegrass—Skaggs has released a string of Grammy-winning albums on his own Skaggs Family Records label, including Bluegrass Rules!, Ancient Tones, and Salt of the Earth.
Known for his virtuoso mandolin and fiddle playing, Skaggs is also celebrated as a producer, songwriter, and collaborator, having worked with icons like Dolly Parton, Bruce Hornsby, Patty Loveless, Travis Tritt, John Fogerty, and Barry Gibb. His music bridges generations, honoring tradition while forging bold, genre-bending new paths.
Today, Ricky Skaggs remains a tireless performer and innovator, bringing bluegrass and country music to audiences around the world. With unmatched skill, heart, and authenticity, he continues to embody the very best of America’s musical heritage.
