Allen Shamblin and Steve Seskin - In the Round

Allen Shamblin
Songwriter • Storyteller • Texas Roots
Tennessee-born and Texas-reared, Allen Shamblin has become one of Nashville’s most respected and beloved songwriters. With a career spanning decades, he has written hundreds of songs — including two modern classics that have left an indelible mark on country and popular music alike.
Signature Songs
- “I Can’t Make You Love Me” — co-written with Mike Reid, recorded by Bonnie Raitt (1991). Named by Mojo magazine as #8 on its “100 Greatest Songs of All Time.” Covered by George Michael, Adele, Boyz II Men, Kelly Clarkson, Kenny Rogers, and many others.
- “The House That Built Me” — co-written with Tom Douglas, recorded by Miranda Lambert (2010). Lambert’s first #1, winner of CMA, ACM, ASCAP, and NSAI Song of the Year. Inspired by Shamblin’s own childhood home in Hoffman, TX.
- “Don’t Laugh at Me” — NSAI Song of the Year (1998), a ballad that continues to resonate with audiences for its compassion and timeless message.
Career Beginnings
Before moving to Nashville in 1987, Shamblin worked as a real-estate appraiser in Austin, TX. Just three years later, he landed his first hit with Randy Travis’ “He Walked on Water.” In 1991, his co-write “Walk on Faith” (with Mike Reid) climbed to the top of the country charts, cementing his place on Music Row.
More Hits & Up-Tempo Success
While known for contemplative ballads, Shamblin’s catalog spans a wide range of styles:
- “Where the Blacktop Ends” — recorded by Keith Urban.
- “Life’s a Dance” — recorded by John Michael Montgomery.
- “Thinkin’ Problem” — a honky-tonk anthem that hit #2 in 1994.
Philosophy of Songwriting
“Great songs are not written by willpower; they are written by yielding and serving the idea. Music comes from life. Don’t miss your life. Embrace that moment, that distraction. That is where the songs are.” — Allen Shamblin, ASCAP Gathering (2012)
Legacy
From intimate ballads to honky-tonk anthems, Allen Shamblin’s songs have touched millions worldwide. His gift lies in crafting music that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable — a true testament to the power of storytelling through song.
