Bob James
Two-Time GRAMMY Winner • Godfather of Smooth Jazz • Hip-Hop Icon
Bob James (b.1939, Marshall, Missouri) is one of the most versatile and influential figures in modern music. Across six decades, his career has taken fascinating turns, earning him a reputation as both the godfather of smooth jazz and an unsung pioneer of hip-hop, thanks to the countless times his music has been sampled in rap’s early foundations.
Early Discovery & Jazz Roots
In 1962, Bob was discovered by Quincy Jones at the Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival, launching a career that would span classical, jazz, funk, and pop. By the 1970s, he became a cornerstone artist at Creed Taylor’s CTI label, where he developed a groundbreaking fusion of jazz with classical structures and funk rhythms.
Breakthrough & Mainstream Success
- 1978: His composition “Angela” became the beloved theme for the hit TV sitcom Taxi, introducing his music to millions worldwide.
- Tappan Zee Records: Founded his own label, producing a diverse body of work including albums dedicated to classical repertoire.
- Fourplay: Co-founded one of smooth jazz’s most successful groups, alongside Lee Ritenour, Nathan East, and Harvey Mason.
Hip-Hop Legacy
James’ catalog is among the most sampled in hip-hop history. Tracks like “Nautilus” and “Take Me to the Mardi Gras” became building blocks for legends including Run-D.M.C., Eric B. & Rakim, LL Cool J, Ghostface Killah, and many more. This unexpected connection cemented his dual identity: a jazz innovator and a hip-hop icon.

Now signed to evosound (Evolution Music Group), Bob James continues to create music at the highest level. His 2023 release, Jazz Hands, earned a GRAMMY nomination, proving his artistry is as vital today as ever.
