John Sebastian, a Greenwich Village native and multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter, has made contributions to modern music that are truly unparalleled. Over his 60-year career, Sebastian has embraced a wide spectrum of styles—contemporary folk, jug band, AM pop, folk-rock, country, psychedelic rock—and left an indelible mark on each. His legendary harmonica work can be heard on Bob Dylan’s Bringing It All Back Home and The Doors’ “Roadhouse Blues”.
Sebastian is best known as the co-founder of The Lovin’ Spoonful, often referred to as the “American Beatles.” From 1965–1969, the band scored seven massive hits, including “Summer in the City,” “Daydream,” “Do You Believe in Magic,” and “Nashville Cats.”
After the Lovin’ Spoonful disbanded, Sebastian launched his solo career and achieved rock immortality with his impromptu performance at Woodstock in 1969, famously captured in the Warner Bros. documentary Woodstock. In 1975, he topped the charts again with “Welcome Back”—the theme song for the hit sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter—cementing his place in American pop culture.
Sebastian’s songs have been covered by hundreds of artists, and his influence continues to reverberate through generations of musicians. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and his signature autoharp is permanently displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Still writing, touring, and recording, John Sebastian remains a cultural spokesperson for his generation and an enduring icon of American music.
